MONDAY’S HARLEM RACING.

The racing at Harlem yesterday was over a
fast track and in a muggy temperature. Five
of the six events on the card produced interest-
ing finishes.

The last furlong of the first race was full of
action, five horses being bunched and under
punishment. The favorite exhibited great
speed along the back stretch. Rounding the
turn she appeared a certain winner. She re-
tired almost at the head of the home stretch.
Teulada, the second choice, was green at the
post. She jumped up and down when asked to
break and got off so badly that she was pulled
up before going a quarter.

Floronso was much the best of his company
in the second race. He was shut off in the back
stretch and had to make three distinct moves
to win. Half way around the turn he dashed
through one opening. Near the furlong post
another spurt brought him through into second
place. Then he challenged Topmast and beat
him.

Miss Marks was believed to be in a soft place
in the third race. She won after a desperate
struggle. Off in front, she barely lasted long
enough to have a head to spare at the winning
post.

Morte Fonse was a hot favorite for the fourth
race. Severely punished the last three-six-
teenths, he won. He might not have done so had
not Southern Spy had a bad break at the start
and been shut off in the final drive. Colonel
Clark called Rutter out of the line before going
to the post and instructed him to use his whip
coming home. Rutter obeyed the letter and
spirit of his instruction. Inconstancy, Jack of
Hearts and Southern Spy were also flogged.
Jack of Hearts’ race was a great improvement
over previous performances here.

A palpable foul marred the fifth race and re-
sulted in the disqualification of the odds-on
favorite, Dave Waldo. Gray said the colt was
to blame, but spectators who had a good view-
said Gray was the offender. For nearly seven
furlongs Dave Waldo galloped in front, with his
mouth wide open.. Coming into the stretch he
swung wide. The first sixteenth of the stretch
he came along swinging. Halfway down Gray
turned in his saddle and looked back on the
outside. Seeing no horses there he quickly
turned the other way. Then he saw Barataria
and Graziella lapped and responding to ener-
getic riding. When less than a furlong away
Dave Waldo crossed to the inside. His left
flank bumped against Barataria’s right shoul-
der, throw-ing him against Graziella. Both
came near going down, particularly the filly,
on which Rose finished out of his stirrups.
Waldo then went on and finished an easy win-
ner. In all probability he would have won
easily had he been kept straight. Before the
horses had been started back toward
the scales a crowd gathered around the
judges stand. There was a slight demonstration
The boys were called into the stand. Gray
said he hit his colt with the spur and the colt
swerved. The judges gave him the benefit of
the explanation and did not punish him. The
colt’s owners and backers suffered, for he was
disqualified and the race given to Barataria.

The last race furnished a surprise. Time-
maker and Frank Thompson were chosen as the
contenders, The Devil being conceded an out-
side chance. Timemaker delayed the start and
eventually got away last. Frank Thompson
did little better. When the field got away,
Donna Rita went to the front and was never
headed. Timemaker closed steadily for five
furlongs. Then he weakened. The Devil, in
hand to the stretch, outfinished Frank Thomp-
son.

Imp is now on her way to Sheepshead Bay.
She was shipped yesterday evening and is due
at Jersey City tonight. If she does well in the
humid Atlantic climate the filly will be a starter
in the Suburbau Handicap, to be run Saturday,
June 18. Her impost will be 102 pounds.
Nobody has been engaged to ride her, but that
matter will be given early attention and a com-
petent lightweight will have the mount. The
Suburban is worth $7,000 to the winner. Satur-
day night Mr. Brossman did not intend to ship
the mare east. Sunday his friends had time to
talk over the matter with him, and advice and
argument influenced him to change his mind.
Paul Miles is probably as much responsible as
anybody for Imp’s departure.

Frank Phillips arrived from California yes-
terday. He stopped at Leadville and Denver.

W. Martin was at the track, but did not have
any mounts. He got back yesterday morning
from Cincinnati, where he rode Plaudit in a
walk-over for the Buckeye Stakes Saturday.
Wednesday night he will go to Latonia to ride
the great 3-year-old in the Latonia Derby. He
will ride Plaudit in all stake engagements ex-
cepting those in which Pat Dunne may have a
starter.

Jockey T. Burns got in yesterday morning and
was a busy figure in the racing.

A dispatch from a good source in New York
last night declared that Bowling Brook had
broken down. Thos. J. Gallagher.

GOSSIP OF THE TURF.

Outside of Jean Beraud, “Kelston,” of the
Morning Telegraph, does not have an exalted
opinion of the 2-year-olds that have shown on
the eastern tracks so far. but says :

‘T have reason to believe that they will make
a better record later on. The half-brother to
Ben Brush, by Sir Dixon— Roseville, is, I feel
satisfied, a good colt, and one that will take a
lot of beating from the best. Macleod of Dare
(half-brother to Halma) will also prove a race-
horse, but I doubt if he will show at his best
until he has another year over his head. Gold
Car, I think, will also show different form to
what he has already done. Indeed, bred as he
is, it would be strange should he fail to develop
some class.

“Charite, in Mr. Walden’s string is, on her pri-
vate form, a high class filly, and should she
train all right she may take a lot of beatipg in
the Futurity. Whiplash, which won the other
day, will also prove but little behind the best
before the season is out. “Matt'’ Simpson,
who owns Whipcord, the dam of Whiplash, has a
yearling half brother to her by the 111 Used
horse Daniel. He is of just the same type as his
raking half sister, only he has a bit more finish
and quality.

Glenheim has not proved anything like his
real form yet, although at that he has shown far
better than Plaudit did in his first attempts.
Good judges who saw him work at Louisville
this spring tell me that he showed a first class
colt, and W T . Walker, the owner of Mr. Phinizy,
which won out Thursday, whose opinion I value
highly, thinks that when Glenheim is right
good he is a first class colt.

“The Hanovers of all ages have, however,
been this season rather unlucky, as several other
highly tried colts have had to be stopped with
bucked shins or coughs, while Handball, which,
on his 2-year-old form, ought to have been heard
from in stake events, is not within thirty pounds
of himself on account of being sore in his
shoulders, so that he is all tied up in his action.

“Mr. Bennett’s handsome 3-year-old, Handsel,
had also to be stopped when going great guns,
and about good enough to beat the best of his
, age. He is now in work again, but he may not
race before the meeting at SheepsheadiBay.”

Start fair. Won driving. Point was probably best and finished gamely. He requires strong
handling and is only a fair colt. Clay ran a good race and hung on well. Ho will do best in
mud. Muggins was unlucky at the start and galloping first part. He stopped badly at the end.
Is a good looker and should improve. Morning showed a nice burst of speed, but quit last fur-
long. Watch him. Pirate M was eased through the stretch. The others appeared to be of no
account.

Winner— Ch. c, by Meddler— Frolic Grace.

Start straggling. Won easily. Intrusive is a fine looker, and was easily the best. He requires
strong handling, and finished game and strong. Laudeman was nicely handled and lucky. He
hung in the last furlong. He appeared to be winning an eighth out, and is improving. Merlin
ran a fair race and was lucky, stopping at the end. Crawford was coming fast at the finish. He
was weakly handled at the end. Watch him* Ryan showed most speed; was probably short.
Watch him. He is a good looker. Chalmers had no chance at the start, and was closing stoutly.
He got a bad ride and favors a route. Slasher ran a poor race. He lacked speed throughout.
The others had no chance at the start.

Winner— Ch. c, by Inverness— Butterfly.

Start bad. Won easily. Larva is a grand looking colt and was lucky but easily the best.
Chemisette closed strong after some interference on turn ; got poor ride. She is promising. Au-
tumn favors a route and strong handling. He was off badly and closed very fast. He had no
chance with the ride he got. Tyrba beat the barrier and stopped badly at the end. Is best in
mud. Imitation improved his position throughout and showed tine form. Was off badly and ran
around field. Dr. Parker had no chance at the start or with ride. He acts like a coward. Watch
him. Sir Hubert was away poorly and ran green. He was coming at the end and is a fine looker.
Watch him. Clap Trap stopped like a shot in the stretch. He will probably improve. Has a lot
of speed.

Start good. Won easily. Ronald was easily the best and won in a gallop. He was eased
up. He is a greatly improved horse. Howard S. ran a good game race. He may improve, but
wants a diuGreut kind of track. Ho showod improvement. Filament led on sufferance and
belongs among cheaper horses. Howard Mann bolted at the start. He had no chance after it.
Is not of much present account. He may win a race in mud, if lucky.

44 V HAVE STUDIED YOUR BOOK, ‘HORSE
1 Racing, or The Art of Making Money at
the Race Track’ and I don’t see that there is
any room for criticism, for I think that anyone
who has played the races can’t help but see that
every word is true. I think there is more to be
learned in 15 minutes reading it than any ordin-
ary man could learn in as many years by simply
following the races,” writes an ardent admirer
of this handsome and sensible little book,
which is issued free t o readers of Daily Racing
Form on application to the publishers, A. F.
Withe, & Co., 720 Omaha Building, Chicago, 111.
Everyone interested in the noble sport should
read it.

Winner — B. f, by Tenny — Fair Vision.

Start fair. Won handily. Miss Tenny was best and drew away like a good filly at the finish.
Dolando is not himself yet. He ran a good race but dislikes weight* Continental showed sur-
prising form and huDg on gamely. Doggett saved ground with him on the rail. Dr! Sharp was
badly bandied and lost ground on the turn. He had no chance with the ride. Needs a strong
jockey and dislikes this track. Imperator, off badly, took the long route and had no chance
with his ride. He requires careful handling and was coming at the end. Nick showed plenty of
speed and appeared to be galloping the first half. He stopped to nothing in the stretch He
probably sulked and is unreliable from now on. Ten Spot alio stopped to nothing.

Scratched— Mainstay, 107 ; X Ray, 107; Hanlon, 104; Handpress, 94; Reprisal, 104* Rotter-
dam, 109.

Winner— Br. c, 4, by Kilwarlin— Oriole.

Start good. Won easily. It was a very fast race. Ogden, favored in every way, was never
pressed. He was perfectly handled and ran an extra good race. Tillo was unlucky at start and
overweighted. He laid away too long and was stopping at the end. Ego was closing stoutly at
the finish, after being beaten on the turn. He is good. Bannock was eased at the end He
couldn't keep up at any part of race. Ortolan was killed off chasing Ogden.

Winner— Ch. f, by Buchanan— Eleanor II.

Post 6 minutes. Start poor. The first five were driving hard. It was a bad lot and any of
the first four had a chance to win the last sixteenth. Miss Fairmount was the luckiest of the
bunch. She had clear sailing through the stretch while Penso Roso and Miss Hayden were
interfered with. With a clear path the latter would have won. She made a strong bid in the
stretch, but was bumpea into and obliged to pull up at the sixteenth pole. Penso Roso was
buck jumping in a pocket all through the stretch. Exquisite came around the field on the turn
and avoided all interferences through the stretch. Dutchio and Teulada were practically left.
Dorsey’s ride on The Last was very bad. Ho took the long route and pumped the filly com-
pletely out in the back stretch.

Scratched— Denise, 105; Rose Riley. 105.

Post 2 minutes. Start good. VVon cleverly after an early drive ; second and third driving
hard. Floronso had to be a lot the best to win. He was sharply cut off in the back stretch, and
alter that Gray was compelled to pick his way. He did it cleverly, too. Topmast had a lot of
speed, and ran a good race. Warren Point is a consistent performer. His best races are at three-
quarters. Festa, slow to begin, finished strong. Watch Tom Toiler at three-quarters in cheaper
company. He is eligible to cheap races.

Post 2 minutes. Start fair. VV011 driving hard; second and third were ridden out. Miss
Marks was tiring fast at the end. Caywood u-*ed judgment on the filly and never drew his
whip until the last twenty yards. Vie Lamout seems to be a good filly. She is a trifle under
sized, but has speed and courage. Charlo ran a fair rac8. Pirate Judge was short on speed,
it was practically a three-horse race all the way.

Winner— Ch. li, 6, by Fonso— Flyer.

Off at first break to a good start. Won driving; second and third driving even harder. Morte
Honse was the best anil in a soft spot. Rutter hustled him along early and the old horse set his
own pace. It was a slow one. Inconstancy, well haualed, ran a creditable race. She was coming
fast at the finish. Jack of Hearts seemed to have a winning chance when straightened away, but
tired in the final pinch. Southern Spy was off in the rear division and had a rough journey.
Harbinger seemed to be running easy down the back stretch and could have gone to the front at
any stage. Throw his race out. He is being pointed for a cheap three-quarter race. He can win
one of that kind. lab him closely in such a race.

Scratched— Paskola, 111.

Winner— B. g, 3, by Lisbon— Aala-Lala.

Post 2 minutes. Start good. Dave Waldo was running easily at the fiuish. All the others
were driving. VV aldo was the best and could easily have won without fouling those behind him.
On the turn he was galloping. Gray swung wide allowing Graziella and Barataria to come up
on the inside. When straightened away Gray looked to the right and saw nothiug coming. He
then took Dave Waldo to the inside. This interfered with Barataria and he in turn bumped into
Graziella. The latter almost went down. So did Barataria. Burns on Barataria started to go
around Dave Waldo enteiing the stretch and that is why Gray made a wide turn. Albert S. fin-
is lied st r(mg_and^i^^mned^^jtjj^gl£ji(^w a full length in front of Graziella at the finish.

, by St. Blaise— Active.

Start fair. Won hand ridden: second and third driving. There was a gen-
eral mix-up at the start from which Donna Rita escaped. She was in the middle of the buuch
and clear of the others when the barrier arose. Caywood took advantage of this and made a
runaway race of it. Th fj . fi lly had a lot of speed and was at her best too. Frauk Thompson and
I imemaker were both in bad positions at the start. Timemaker got straightened out early and
had little or no excuse. Trank Thompson, though, was pocketed all of the way. He ran much
better than the figures show. The Devil is good and ran a good race. He has been badly
placed. Depending had some speed. He was high in flesh, though, and hardly ready to race.
Watch him. -
